The Holtzman Inkblot Test

This is a personality test that is given to learn more about a person's personality. It is a projected personality assessment. Those who are at least 5 years of old are able to take part in this assessment. This can also be used to diagnose a number of mental health illnesses, too.holtzman inkblot example

Many of the illnesses include, but are not limited to depression, schizophrenia, character disorders, and addiction.

This is known as psychometric testing and it should only be done under the care of a licensed professional.

If considering taking the Holtzman Inkblot Technique, it is important to learn more about the test to know what to expect. We've gathered more information about this technique and assessment, so you're able to make a more informed decision on using this personality assessment.

Taking the Holtzman Inkblot Technique Assessment

Taking the assessment is not hard to do, and it is not a fail or pass test, either. There is another test that uses the same principles and techniques a bit, but the Holtzman is different from the Rorschach because it has clearly defined objective scoring criteria to stick with.

HIT consists of 45 inkblots on cards or papers. The examiner has a stack of 47 inkblot cards, two of these cards are for practice. They keep them face down on the table, so you're unable to see them. The examiner then hands the cards one-by-one to the subject and the subject tells the examiner what they see from the inkblot.

The subject can only give one answer per card, and it should always be the first answer you come up with. Sometimes a response might have to be repeated or elaborated on, but cannot be changed.

The assessment takes no more than 80 minutes. Your score is then scored against 22 personality-related characteristics to find out which you possess.

The Holtzman Inkblot Technique in Groups

Though the assessment is done in pictures, it can be done with a group and does not have to be done in a private setting. There are between 30 and 45 inkblot cards used in a group setting that are all projected on a screen. The test subjects will then answer what they think each inkblot reminds them of, on paper.

Benefits of Using This Technique

Even though this technique was invented to cut back on the discrimination of the Rorschach and the results the test provides, there are many benefits that come with using it.
  • Understand more about your personality type
  • Easy to do test
  • Does not take a lot of time to do
  • Ideal to use with other assessments and tests for personality disorders
  • Easy way for professionals to learn more about patients they treat

The Results of the Assessment

The results that are given from the assessment should only be read and interpreted by a licensed, professional psychologist, psychiatrist, or other mental health professionals who are clinically trained. They can provide an accurate diagnosis along with other mental health and personality tests to the subject.
